“This work of Bearden is potent and enigmatic. For me, it's all about the eyes.. They are just so aware, and give the overall piece complete immediacy and presence." —Yamini Nayar

Yamini Nayar's work explores an intersection found between photography, sculpture and the constructed moment. Her large-scale photographs are made from sculptures built in the studio on tabletops from found and raw materials, recorded with her large-format camera and disassembled and discarded afterward. Using historical sources as departure points, Nayar fabricates structures that explore the natures of multiple experiences and memory in a contemporary moment. Only the photograph remains, as an object and entry point into a moment held together for the lens.

In 2010, Nayar gave the Lightborne Lecture at the Cincinnati Art Museum, as well as held artist residencies at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and the Center for Photography in Woodstock. Her recent exhibitions and projects include Manual for Treason, Sharjah Bienniel;Arrested Views at Thomas Erben Gallery, NY;  Solo Presentation at NADA, Miami; By All Means, Art Basel, Switzerland; 2010 Indian Art Summit, New Delhi; Empire Strikes Back, Contemporary Indian Art Today at Saatchi Gallery, UK; Tough Pictures, Cincinnati Art Museum. Nayar's work has been reviewed in the New Yorker, New York Times, Vogue India, ArtIndia, the Guardian, ArtPapers and Philips de Pury's NOW, Art of the 21st Century. Her photographs are in private and public collections, including the Saatchi Collection, Queens Museum, Cincinnati Art Museum and the US Arts in Embassies.

Originally from the Detroit area, Yamini Nayar lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Nayar holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1999 and an MFA from School of Visual Arts, NY where she was a recipient of the Aaron Siskind Memorial Scholarship.
