Mecklenburg County - Maudell Sleet's Magic Garden - 1978

I chose this piece because it's beautiful and invokes such a feeling of memory and nostalgia in me. The colors and landscape makes me remember Haiti when I lived there as a child.
I've loved Bearden's work since the first time I saw his art. In his vivid paintings and collages he transforms the mundane into the profound. Romare Bearden's level of detail is outstanding. I love the way he builds worlds with layers of paint and paper giving his environments dimension and such depth.

Her award winning fiction has been published in various anthologies and literary magazines. Her collages have been used on book covers and have been shown at galleries, libraries and cafes on the east coast.

These vibrant collages are dedicated to the tenacity and entrepreneurship of the Haitian market women and women all over the globe who carry/balance their livelihood on their heads.  Her grandmothers were like these women; managing work, households, their families and they also had to carry/balance children too! They have inspired her work deeply.
