Major exhibition on Bearden now in Newark

by Leslie Martinez

The Southern Recollections exhibition is one of the many great events from the Bearden Centennial. Romare Bearden: Southern Recollections is a traveling exhibition from one of the greatest Harlem Renaissance artist, Romare Bearden. This exhibition has been to the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina the birthplace of Romare Bearden, Tampa Museum of Art in Tampa, Florida, and now it’s at the Newark Museumin Newark, New Jersey. There’s a wide range of art in that the Southern Recollections provides, over 50 art pieces. The pieces in which are reflecting on his surroundings but from his prospective from his entire career.

Bearden’s art is for all sorts of people; his art pieces are very colorful with abstract shapes. This is a great family activity for a nice Saturday or Sunday family day. Kids love and enjoy his art work because it’s so upbeat and colorful. It’s such a significant exhibition for kids, at the Mint Museum about 10,000 5th grade students attended the exhibition and enjoyed it. Also a great place for art lovers, even for people who aren’t too familiar with art. The significance behind the art pieces and the amount of love and passion he had for art can be seen through the exhibition special informative pamphlets and by the setting on where his art pieces are presented.

We want to thank The Mint Museum for organizing such a pleasant show in honor

of our great artist Romare Bearden.
